Well, after some complications, I met my tutee and we've set up a steady schedule for our meetings. Now that I've met him, I'm excited to get started. His name is Pete (his name in Chinese is hard to pronounce and even harder to write in Roman letters) and he came here about 2 months ago from Taiwan. He seems like a very happy guy. I'm sure he won't be hard to get along with. Despite what he may say, his English is advanced.
This first session was more of a meet-and-greet and a chance for us to establish what he wants to work on the most. He said he wants to focus on reading and speaking. I told him about my exchange year in Thailand and he was very surprised that I wanted to go to Asia and learned the language there. I suggested that, since there are journals of all the Rotary exchange students online, we could read some entries of the students who went to Taiwan. I can relate to Pete on many levels and I think this is going to be a beneficial experience for both of us.
