My second tutoring lesson with Jia and Hanan was to be on pronouns. They had just gone over that in their Grammar class and, once again, expected a theoretical explanation on the subject. I prepared as well I could and we started with writing down a table of the pronouns they knew and what their use would be on the board. They more or less mentioned all of them as a team, and then I had to point out extra information about the indefinite pronouns. They proceeded to put some of the pronouns in use in a very simple cloze exercise. I am assuming that they will be trying the communicative approach from CIES, therefore my goal is more of a repetition/reinforcement sort of job. We already had some issues with the sentence “What can [blank] tell me about your family?” Hanan understood the context, but Jia didn’t, so we just walked through the entire explanation again and I think it was good for the three of us!
More problems arose with the possessive adjectives vs. possessive pronouns since I don’t even think I know what the differences are and I realized it when we were about to start on the activity! Glups! Thank god I was saved by the bell! It was 4.00pm already and I closed the session talking about the next activity that would be the pronouns in the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ which became an explanation about fairy tales in the world. Hopefully by today I will have figured out the differences between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns to be able to help them understand. However, after Hanan asked me to help her with some homework I think I should try to get them some composition help. And, by the way, have you ever thought about what a very strange name ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ is?
