For this lesson, I cheated. I took the outline I prepared for my CIES lesson planning and used it as a guide line of sorts for my time with BJ. Sort of...
After the last week's enthusiastic discussion of Native Americans, I found a text book about different Native Americans and prepared a session of reading and vocab and discussion. This class was much more productive than the last. I spent some time showing him the VOA sight and how one can find articles to listen to while reading along. He seemed pretty enthusiastic about this sight after we listened to an article on the elections and hearing how slow and clear the reader spoke. Then I showed him my guilty pleasure, the Merriam Webster sight! Here one can look up a word, listen to how it is pronounced, click on a podcast and read along. The reading is a little fast but I appreciate all the context built up around a word which can make it easier to remember.
We then went through the vocab list for the article I had picked out, discussing each word. We looked at the title and the first few paragraphs to guess what the text was about (Sequoyah). Then I asked him to read the first page for homework and underline the words he doesn't know for next class.
We both seemed to leave the class in good spirits. I was more confident in addressing issues of pronunciation with him; I used the dry erase board and everything.
