I met with Fatwan this past week and worked on grammar with his homework. He was still stuck on irregular past tense verbs. The -ed of the past tense was easily grasped for him but the various amounts of irregular verbs were confusing and overwhelming. He seems to be a very visual learner so helping him by writing a sentence and letting him finish the verb helped a lot. Also, I noticed a crossword puzzle in his book and we did it together. He seemed much more confident after our meeting with learning a few endings. I reminded him throughout the session that it will take a long time to remember all of the verbs and to not get discouraged when he does not know or forgets one. Encouragement really helps with him. It was easy to make jokes and bond with him over his work.
We found ourselves getting a bit off topic from time to time. When a new verb would be presented, we would use it in a sentence. Then, sometimes, we'd continue on what the sentence meant. I guess this is good for comprehension for him because it is much easier to learn when you know what you are talking about, rather than just knowing the correct way to spell a word.
Next time, we are going to go over the words that Fatwan learned today and we will more than likely expand on his lists. It is exciting to see his vocabulary expand each time we meet. Which has only been twice! It seems that he is very comfortable speaking to me, which is always welcome. Until next time
Matthew
