Victoria - Class Observation 2

Today I observed an intermediate composition class. The teacher, Felicia, started by writing the agenda on the board. I always appreciated that when I was in a language class so I like to see the practice in other classes. Felicia has a very vibrant personality which is very beneficial in a class that takes part in the morning when students have not fully woken up yet. She then spoke about the papers that she had emailed to the students with corrections. She did not make corrections but highlighted the parts that corrections are needed on so that they can practice editing their own papers. I thought this was a wonderful idea. she had put corrections on the first and second draft but this was the final draft and she only highlighted. She also offered to meet after school to go over the mistakes in case the student was completely lost about what corrections should be made. They started talking about the integrated TOEFL test. She asked the students what are the best ways to ensure you get a high score on the TOEFL and then had the class answer the question. She did not let one student answer because the class relies on this student for answers. She introduced them to a way of taking notes about the reading portion and the listening portion and why it is important to take notes for both sections. The students then had to read and listen to stories. She then asked for the overall idea, what were the opposing sides and what were their points. she wrote everything down on the board. I thought that this class was conducted well. There were obvious achievers and slackers and she dealt with each group appropriately. Everyone was comfortable speaking in class and at least tried to answer the questions. I also met a student frm Turkey that is interested in psychology and wants to talk to me later about the program here ar FSU. I hope I can be of assistance to her.
