Monday I sat in on Ross Kozloski's listening class. The moment I entered the room, I recognized some of the lively students from the previous class I sat in on and relieved they remembered me. They really are a funny group of people, we couldn't stop laughing about the silliest things. Anyway, I really did not know what to expect, I mean listening can be a tough subject to cover. After Ross explained the agenda for that day he told the class there would be an open note quiz on a movie they watched last week about the sun. The quiz was 10 short answer questions, and many students were flustered because it appeared to be their first open answer quiz. (Many were asking where the answers were)
After the quiz, Ross divided the class into pairs and asked them to summarize their notes from another movie they watched about American interviews. He asked the students to practice their summary verbally because after, they would go up to the lab to record it for a grade. He also explained to them the rubric he would be basing their grade on and told students to grade their pair. After about 10 minutes of practicing, we headed up to the lab. Students sat at a computer with a headset and recorded themselves telling their summary. Ross let me try it out and I discussed what I did last weekend. Listening to myself was quite awkward but I can see how it would give students feedback about their speaking and listening skills. Once everyone saved their files, we were free to go!
