Dallas-TP2

Last week Saleem and I attempted to meet. We rescheduled our meeting for today. Saleem prefers to hold conversations to improve his speech. We met at Applebee's, and I asked him if I could record the conversation. I wanted to allow him to listen and compare and contrast our speech. I was planning on providing him the opportunity to hear himself. Unfortunately he denied the request, therefore I attempt to correct him throughout our evening. I feel as if he's looking for something informal and I'm ok with that. The concern I have is if he is going to retain the subtle corrections I provide for him. I also felt a but reluctant to do to much correcting because I didn't want to come off as nagging. I'm considering being a bit more assertive with my corrections. I also think that I should have him repeat his incorrect statements. Saleem appears to be at a level of group 2. He can communicate his point but there are a few pauses. His has issues with some of his tenses as well. Today I discovered that he has a wife and son back home. We talked about hobbies and I learned a little arabic. Since I cannot record him I wonder what is my best option? He seems to object to doing any reading either. I really think that these thing would help him. He says he studies six hours a day so I guess I'll have to just oblige.

  1. Recording was a great idea, although I can see why some people don't feel comfortable with it. I always feel weird listening to a recording of my voice. I would imagine he hears himself speak when he does work in the computer lab at CIES though.
