Today I met with my tutee Cynthia. We immediately jumped into an exercise to work on her listening skills similar to the one we did in class with the Friends episode. I picked out a segment about a mystery light switch in one of the Friends' apartments. She watched it once, then I had her write down the dialogue. I was impressed by how fast Cynthia picked up the exercise, because the last time we worked on her listening skills she needed me to pause between sentences. She also had many questions about the episode, the most entertaining one was about how "Rachel" asked "Joey" to flush the toilet after he used it at her place. I then had to explain to her the American culture joke about how men leave the toilet seat up.
After the Friends listening exercise, I had her listen to a Profile America segment about Halloween and summarize the article for me. She also, quickly caught on to this and show drastic improvement. We also went through any vocabulary she did not understand and went over the words that she has trouble pronouncing. After Cynthia mastered her new vocabulary words, we went over her old ones that she had trouble memorizing. Out of the 10 she did not know from last time we met, she only missed 3!
Towards the end of the session we listened to a Taylor Swift song with the lyrics so that she could hear words in a song. I explained who the artist was and her "country" accent. We then began speaking in "country" accents. Cynthia really liked the song and told me she heard it once before. Next week is my last session with her and I hope that I can help her master the double l's.
