Today in my class with Radka at the library we went over driving directions and how to
understand them. My teaching technique with her has followed the patterns established by Pat Morita in his role as Miyagi-san from the 80's coming-of-age film, The Karate Kid. Every complex procedure can be broken down into smaller steps that, once mastered, can be then combined to form complex and effective maneuvers.
With that in mind, I printed out a large copy of the map of Silent Hill made by That Guy on the Couch and used it in this lesson. The map was easy to use because of its layout, which made it easy to see how the roads linked together. After basic drills, I had her tell me how to get to Neely's Bar from Brookhaven Hospital: "Take Carrol Street to Nathan Avenue and then take a right. Pass Jack's Inn and the Silent Hill Savings Bank. Turn left onto Neely Street. Pass Katz Street. Neely's Bar will be on your left." She soon mastered that task.
To practice describing passing city blocks, we used the portions of the maps labeled Old Silent Hill and Central Silent Hill. She did a good job of incorporating that detail into the practice today. I will be teaching her tomorrow in the morning.
I am totally going to steal this lesson. Sounds awesome! And I love the reference to mr. Miyagi, Claude-San!
