Daniel Fletcher Class Observation #1

Last Thursday on October 28th, I went to an advanced listening class with Felicia. The teacher started the class by trying to get people to dress up for the Halloween party that Friday. The class didn't seem to interested, but she provided several costume ideas. Felicia then took roll and knew every student by name. The class started with a short vocabulary lesson. The students were given five different sentences with new vocabulary words. Students were told to learn the new words based on the context. One of the sentences was 'Caught up in the wonder of the storyteller's tale, the rapt listeners sat motionless, hanging on his every word'. The new vocabulary word here is 'rapt'. After having to time to think it over, the students gave their opinion on what the word meant.

Students were then given an assignment to make a presentation before the class which was due the next week. Grading would be based upon the elements that we all learn about, such as: addressing all the content, appearance, eye contact, grammar, pronunciation, preparation, introduction, body, conclusion, etc. The teacher stressed that even if a group member was absent, the project still had to be presented by the remaining members. For the remainder of the class, students were told to get into groups to discuss the assignment together. I helped a girl from Saudi Arabia who didn't have any partners that day. She was going to interview an American friend. Since the American had traveled to Egypt, I came up with the idea of having the American girl write some simple greetings (hello, how are you, good bye) in Arabic. This would be an excellent introduction, and would cause all of the students who knew Arabic to laugh.
